How Small Size Locs are maintained is crucially determined by the Sisterlocks neatness principles, hence the use of fixed neat grid partings for retightenings every 4-6 weeks.
The result for many is DEVASTATING! Our obsession with Sisterlocks neatness and it's long term consequences will be explain here and if it isn't too late for you, YOUR Alternate SOLUTION.

Sisterlocks / Microlocs installations and retightenings process is predominantly carried out through backwards braiding technique, utilising a specialised tool that intricately weaves within the strands right down to the scalp, ensuring a tight interlocked finished or backward braided finish to discourage any strand movements.

The strategy of preventing the backward braid / interlocked area from unravelling necessitates a cautious approach towards water exposure (AVOIDANCE), and therefore Clients are instructed by Consultants and Locticians to carry out the band and braid method during washing sessions. For many clients, this is the only time water touches their head. If you are reading this and you are noticing driness, please STOP Reading this article. Go & WET YOUR LOCS NOW. You can continue reading after hydrating your locs.

Once regrowth has been tightly braided in with a tool (there are several) creating the interlocked braiding pattern... It's a waiting game.

The Sisterlocks / Microlocs Wearer enters a waiting phase, heavily influenced by the characteristics of their African Textured Hair. This can be an extremely frustrating period lasting for some softer zones of the head 7 years!
The depleting ritual and technique of interlocking, the importance of avoiding locs hydration, the discomfort and strain associated with tightness, forcing strands to be unnaturally stretched, the relentless pursuit of neatness driven by coping the prevailing wig and weave culture of cascading locs.
The struggle to embrace ourl natural hair texture, the tendency to compare and compete in order to conform to a predetermined standard of beauty within the context of Sisterlocks/Microlocs — all contribute to a cycle that proves unsustainable and detrimental effects to the health of our hair.

Amidst these challenges, there exists a more nourishing approach to the maintenance of your Sisterlocks, Microlocs, Fine Locs, Tiny Locs, Braidlocks, Delicate Locs, and any other Small Size Locs.
The journey of embracing small size locs like Knotted Locs is more than a hairstyle—it’s a mindset shift that empowers individuals to reclaim their autonomy and embrace their natural beauty.
Unlike traditional loc methods, which often impose rigid maintenance routines and restrict natural hair practices, Knotted Locs offers a liberating alternative that prioritises freedom, self-expression, and hair health.
Knotted Locs challenges outdated norms by giving wearers 100% control over their locs. No longer bound by strict retightening schedules, painful procedures, or limitations like avoiding water and oils, Knotted Locs encourages a connection with your hair’s natural needs. This practice not only promotes healthier strands but also nurtures a deeper sense of self-awareness and self-love.
With Knotted Locs, you don’t just transform your hair—you transform your relationship with yourself. It’s about trusting your hands, your instincts, and your ability to care for your locs without relying on external tools or approval. By embracing this method, you step into a life of less worry, less pain, and more peace of mind, allowing your unique identity to shine through effortlessly.

About Me
Welcome To My Knotted Locs World! I’m Melissa Blake, a passionate advocate for healthy locs and a thriving scalp. With over 18 years of experience in Sisterlocks, my journey has been one of care, growth, and transformation—both for my clients and myself.

In 2012, I became a Certified Sisterlocks Consultant, dedicating my craft to nurturing the beauty and individuality of locs.

However, as I worked closely with countless individuals, I saw an alarming rise in scalp trauma and hair loss within the Sisterlocks community.
In 2018, I founded Knotted Locs to address these issues head on. It was clear to me that the standard approaches weren’t enough to protect and preserve the crown of so many who trusted in this system. I felt the need to create a better path one that not only acknowledges the challenges but offers real solutions rooted in care, science, and a deeper understanding of our unique hair and scalps.

With Knotted Locs, my mission is to empower individuals to wear their locs with pride, free from pain and insecurity. I’m here to offer guidance, healing, and support because your loc journey deserves to be as beautiful and resilient as you are.
